1. The High-Volume Smartstream & Gamma Group (1.4L – 1.6L Petrol)
These lightweight aluminum DOHC heads feature advanced dual-port fuel injection (DPFI) or Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI), integrated with dual continuously variable valve timing (D-CVVT).
- Smartstream G1.5 / Gamma II Heads (Naturally Aspirated & Turbo):

- Technical Specifications: Modern Smartstream G1.5 heads utilize an integrated exhaust manifold (IEM) cast directly into the head assembly. - Service Advisory: Forced-induction (Turbo) variants and naturally aspirated units feature different cooling jacket volumes. These components are not interchangeable.
2. The Nu & Smartstream G2.0 Family (2.0L Petrol)
Commonly found in mid-size crossovers and sedans, these heads possess a wider physical footprint and larger valve diameters compared to the 1.5L family.
- Nu MPI / Smartstream G2.0 Heads:
- Mapped Models: Tucson, Sportage, Elantra.
- Technical Specifications: Several iterations of this head employ an Atkinson Cycle timing strategy, delaying intake valve closure during the compression stroke to enhance overall thermal efficiency.
- Structural Integrity Warning: This family utilizes thin aluminum bridges between the intake valves. Severe thermal stress from cooling system failure can lead to microscopic hairline cracks, resulting in a loss of compression across adjacent cylinders.
3. The “Kappa” Sub-Compact Group (1.2L – 1.4L)
Developed for sub-compact front-wheel-drive vehicles and entry-level sedans.
- Kappa MPI / Dual-CVVT Heads:
- Mapped Models: Soluto, Rio.

Engineered to withstand the high combustion pressures inherent in high-torque Common-Rail Direct Injection (CRDi) diesel engines.
- D4HB (2.2L R-Engine) & Smartstream D2.2 Heads:

- Engineering Evolution: Previous Sorento and Santa Fe models utilize the cast-iron block R-Engine (D4HB), whereas current models feature the all-aluminum Smartstream D2.2. The cylinder head deck profiles and oil-feed configurations are incompatible between these generations.
Machine Shop & Parts Sorting Tips:
- Injection Port Identification: It is critical to distinguish between the Smartstream G1.5 MPI and the Gamma 1.6 GDI heads. While visually similar, the GDI head features high-pressure machining cutouts within the combustion chamber for the fuel injectors, whereas the MPI head relies on intake runner ports.
- Torque-to-Yield (TTY) Fasteners: All engine families listed utilize stretch-type cylinder head bolts. Upon removal for gasket replacement or resurfacing, new bolts must be installed to ensure uniform clamping load and prevent premature gasket failure.
