BMW Cylinder Head Technical Reference
BMW cylinder heads function as integrated hydraulic and mechanical assemblies. They incorporate three primary engineering systems: VANOS (variable camshaft timing), Valvetronic (variable valve lift via an eccentric shaft), and high-pressure Direct Fuel Injection (HDEV).
The current product range is categorized into four core aluminum modular engine families, including specialized high-performance Motorsport (S-code) variants.

1. Modular 4-Cylinder: B48 Family (2.0L TwinPower Turbo)
These are modern, highly standardized inline-4 heads featuring a closed-deck sealing footprint.
- B48 / B46 DOHC Cylinder Heads:
- Mapped Models: X1, X4, X3, 3-Series, 5-Series, 4-Series, 1-Series, 2-Series, X2.
- Technical Detail: The B48 head features an integrated exhaust manifold on most mainstream configurations. The turbo scroll flanges bolt directly to a unified cast opening in the head itself, heavily reducing warm-up times and weight.
- Valvetrain Setup: Houses a top-mounted Valvetronic servomotor acting on an eccentric shaft, paired with roller rocker arms.
2. Modular 6-Cylinder: B58 Family (3.0L Inline-6)
This family represents the primary volume of current inventory. The B58 cylinder head utilizes advanced thermal management systems designed to withstand high cylinder pressures while maintaining compact packaging.
- B58 DOHC Cylinder Heads:
- Mapped Models: Mass-market volume of 3-Series, 4-Series, 5-Series, X3, X4, X5, X6, X7, 7-Series, 8-Series.
- Technical Detail: Split into three generations (Gen 1, Gen 2/TU, and Gen 3). Gen 1 features a fully integrated manifold, whereas the TU (Technical Update) separates the ports out into a distinct 3-port split exit design to isolate cylinder exhaust pulses for better twin-scroll turbo response.
- Machine Shop Warning: The B58 timing chain assembly is located at the back of the cylinder head (flywheel side). To pull or swap a head, the engine must either be dropped or heavily cleared from the firewall to access the rear-mounted timing gear track.
3. High-Performance 6-Cylinder: S55 & S58 Groups
Built exclusively for authentic M-Division builds. These heads strip out efficiency compromises in favor of high-RPM strength and flow.
- S55 & S58 High-Performance Heads:
- Mapped Models: M3, M4, and high-trim M versions of X3 / X4.
- Technical Detail: The modern S58 head casting core is manufactured via 3D-printed sand molds. This geometric freedom allows BMW to route cooling channels around the combustion chambers that are physically impossible to cast using traditional steel molds.
- Structural Difference: Unlike the standard B58, the S58 cylinder head features structural cross-bracing to survive cylinder pressures pushing past 7,000 RPM.
4. Twin-Turbo V8: N63 & S63 Family (4.4L Hot-Vee)
These engines utilize mirrored cylinder heads mounted at a 90-degree angle in a “Hot-Vee” orientation.
- N63 (TwinPower) & S63 (M-Engine) Cylinder Heads:
- Mapped Models: High-trim X5, X6, X7, 5-Series, 7-Series, 8-Series, M8.
- Technical Detail: The airflow path is reversed. The intake ports face outward toward the front fenders, while the exhaust ports discharge inward into the center valley of the block directly into the turbochargers.
- Thermal Stress: Because the exhaust heat radiates directly between the heads, these castings undergo extreme thermal cycles. The valve stem seals on the N63 heads are a high-wear inventory component due to constant heat exposure in the valley.
Technical Service & Maintenance Protocols:
Injector Bore Maintenance: High-pressure direct fuel injectors are positioned vertically adjacent to the spark plug wells. Fuel seepage can result in the injector becoming chemically bonded to the aluminum bore. Technicians must use the designated sliding hammer extraction tool during removal to prevent damage to the injector sleeve.
- Valvetronic Reassembly: If a head goes in for deck resurfacing, the Valvetronic eccentric shaft and spring assembly must be locked into place with a specific BMW retaining fixture before removal. Reassembling it blindly without releasing the spring pre-load will strip the soft aluminum threads out of the cam carrier blocks instantly.
