Hydraulic Master Cylinder

The master cylinder is the heart of a hydraulic brake system. It converts the mechanical pressure from your foot on the brake pedal into hydraulic pressure, which is then sent through brake lines filled with brake fluid to the wheels.

  • Single Master Cylinder (older vehicles) – one piston pushes fluid to all wheels.
  • Dual (Tandem) Master Cylinder (modern vehicles) – has two circuits, usually split front/rear or diagonal (front-left + rear-right, front-right + rear-left) for safety.

⚙️ Rear (Back) Brake Setup

When referencing “Back”, it usually means the rear brake system, which can be:

  1. Drum Brakes with Wheel Cylinders
    • Common in older and economy vehicles.
    • The master cylinder sends pressure to the rear wheel cylinders, which push brake shoes against the drum.
  2. Disc Brakes with Rear Calipers
    • Found in many modern cars.
    • The master cylinder sends fluid to the rear calipers, which squeeze the brake pads against the rotor.

🛠️ Related Parts in the Rear Hydraulic System

  • Brake Lines & Hoses – Carry fluid from master cylinder to the rear wheels.
  • Proportioning Valve / ABS Module – Balances brake force (more pressure up front, less in the rear).
  • Rear Calipers / Wheel Cylinders – The hydraulic actuators at the wheels.
  • Brake Shoes or Pads – Friction materials that stop the wheel.

⚠️ Common Issues in Hydro M/Cyl & Rear Brakes

  • Leaking brake fluid (from master cylinder, hoses, or wheel cylinders).
  • Air in the lines → spongy brake pedal.
  • Seized wheel cylinder or caliper → uneven braking.
  • Worn pads/shoes → reduced braking power.
  • Faulty proportioning valve → rear brakes lock up or don’t engage properly.
